Real Madrid conceded an early goal against hosts AEK Athens on matchday four of the Champions League league phase, as Mauritanian Aboubakary Koita scored in the 12th minute, extending the team’s struggles away from home in the competition.
The goal came after former Real Madrid player Luka Jović passed to Koita near the edge of the penalty area, and the latter struck a powerful shot into the left corner of Thibaut Courtois’s goal. According to Opta, Koita became the first Mauritanian to score in the competition’s history and the second player from Mauritania to feature in it, after Jordan Lefort with Young Boys in the 2021-2022 season.
Stats Foot reported that the goal took the number of goals Real Madrid have conceded in their last three away matches in the Champions League to eight. The team had conceded three goals against Roma on matchday two of the current season and four against Bayern Munich in the second leg of last season’s quarter-finals.
