Portuguese Journalist: Ronaldo’s Retirement This Way Is “A Disgrace to Us”
Portuguese journalist Luis Villar said Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to retire from international football this way shocked the Portuguese people, calling it “a disgrace.” Ronaldo announced his retirement on Thursday after playing 234 matches for Portugal, scoring 146 goals and providing 45 assists.

Portuguese journalist Luis Villar said Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to retire from international football this way was “a disgrace,” adding that it shocked the Portuguese people. Ronaldo announced his international retirement on Thursday after a career with the national team in which he played 234 matches, scored 146 goals and provided 45 assists, and won three titles: the UEFA Nations League twice and the European Championship once.
Villar believed Ronaldo made his decision because he did not want to play under Jorge Jesus, and accused the coach of treating him wrongly. He added that Ronaldo had not produced outstanding performances, but the national team had not been good either, so it was not right to hold the player responsible for everything.
Villar stressed that Ronaldo would remain, in his view, the best player in Portugal’s history, and that he deserved greater appreciation for what he had given his country.
