Diego Simeone needs one more win to equal Luis Aragonés’s record for victories in La Liga. The Atlético Madrid coach has won 343 matches in the competition, compared with Aragonés’s 344; Simeone can draw level if his team beats Levante.
Simeone took charge of Atlético in January 2012 and led the club to two La Liga titles, while restoring the team as a challenger to Real Madrid and Barcelona for trophies. The report noted that he had come close to the record after managing around 192 fewer matches than Aragonés.
Several coaches praised Simeone’s career and his impact on the team. Julen Lopetegui said his value went beyond the number of wins and included preserving Atlético’s ambition and competitive spirit, while Imanol Alguacil noted that he had instilled a competitive mentality that helped the team maintain its presence in the Champions League. Paco Jémez praised his continued ability to deliver results and break records.
