Barcelona player Lamine Yamal discusses in a new documentary how his parents’ Moroccan and Equatorial Guinean backgrounds shaped him, as well as his upbringing and childhood circumstances. He says his courage on the pitch and strong personality are linked to his Moroccan roots, while he inherited his sense of humour from his mother.
Yamal was born in 2007 near Barcelona to a Moroccan father and a mother from Equatorial Guinea. He explained that his mother was a major presence in his life, particularly after his parents separated when he was three, and recalled living in cramped accommodation with little privacy. He said he was happy that his family’s circumstances had improved, that his mother, father and grandmother were living securely, and that his younger brother was having a better childhood than he had.
The report recounted part of his family’s journey to Barcelona, noting that his paternal grandmother came from Morocco first, then brought her children over after working for several years. His mother settled there with her family, met his father and married him, and the couple lived in shared accommodation before Yamal was born.
Yamal progressed to Barcelona’s first team, and the source says he contributed to 23 goals in 14 official matches, scoring 11 and assisting 12. It also reported that Barcelona top the Spanish league with 30 points, ahead of Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid.
