Lamine Camara’s failed move could solve Chelsea’s midfield puzzle as Romeo Lavia returns

An analysis suggests that Lamine Camara’s failed move to Chelsea may have worked in the club’s favour, with Romeo Lavia returning to the team and impressing in a 2-0 win over Manchester United. Lavia has started five league matches this season and, for the first time since joining in 2023, completed a full Premier League match.
Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso praised Lavia’s performance. He completed 88.9% of his passes against United and was among his team’s leaders in passing and creating chances, as well as setting up Morgan Rogers for the opening goal. Lavia led Chelsea players in tackles with five and ranked second in interceptions with four, while winning all of his tackles.
The analysis says Lavia and Caicedo performed complementary roles in midfield, although the partnership’s continuation depends on Lavia overcoming his physical problems. Chelsea had agreed a fee with Monaco for Camara, but the French club halted the deal at the last minute as Folarin Balogun’s move to Everton neared completion. Balogun’s transfer then also fell through, leaving both players at Monaco.
According to the article, Lavia’s injuries have kept him from playing regularly, but against United he showed why he should be used alongside Caicedo when fit. The analysis argues that Alonso’s management of the player’s workload and the small number of European matches could help keep him fit.
