Racing player Almeida said Barcelona tried to sign him in his first season at Valencia and that he had dreamed of moving to the Catalan club. He said agent Jorge Mendes told him of Barcelona’s interest during the January winter transfer window.
According to Almeida, Barcelona considered signing him on loan with an option to buy after suffering injuries in the squad at the time. But Valencia refused to let him leave because the team was fighting to avoid relegation and coach Gennaro Gattuso needed him as an important player.
Almeida noted that the deal was not close to being completed and that Barcelona’s interest was not necessarily a move toward a long-term investment, but rather an attempt to find a temporary solution to strengthen its squad amid the injuries.
