Premier League footballers have been urged to stay vigilant after the homes of three players were burgled while they were playing. Everton striker Thierno Barry said he was relieved his family were not at home when his Greater Manchester property was broken into last week; his partner and their child were watching him play against Newcastle.
Barry said he may have shared too many details about his family and personal life, which could have put them at risk, adding that the incident reminded him of the importance of protecting the people he loves. Brittany De Villiers, partner of Nottingham Forest player Morgan Gibbs-White, also spoke about their home being burgled days ago and urged people to stay vigilant, activate security systems and report anything suspicious. She confirmed that nobody was at home at the time and said she was prepared to offer a reward for information that could help identify those responsible.
A Cheshire Police spokesperson said officers received a report on Wednesday 21 October of three unknown men in the back garden of a neighbouring property in the Alderley Park area. Officers arrived but did not find the suspects, then discovered that a burglary had taken place and several items had been stolen. Bruno Fernandes’s home was also ransacked during a Manchester United match, while thieves have previously targeted other players, including Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling, Victor Lindelöf and João Cancelo.
