Newcastle United has confirmed it will hold a ceremony honouring service personnel who lost their lives before Monday evening’s Premier League match against Everton at St James’ Park. Representatives of the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force will take part, laying wreaths in the centre circle before a minute’s silence accompanied by the Last Post.
The club urged supporters to reach their seats early, while supporters’ group Wor Flags has prepared a remembrance display in the East Stand. Newcastle’s players will also wear shirts bearing the remembrance poppy, which will later be auctioned, with proceeds going to the Royal British Legion. The club will dedicate space on matchday to local veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder.
The ceremony remembers those who gave their lives in military service, including 23 former Newcastle United players who died during the two World Wars.
