Young winger Luca Williams-Barnett caught the eye on his Premier League debut for Tottenham, coming on in the closing minutes of Saturday evening’s match against Crystal Palace and creating a clear chance for Mohammed Kudus that went unfinished.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi described the 18-year-old as a great talent and said bringing him on was the right decision, despite it being his first league appearance. Williams-Barnett had dribbled past two Palace defenders and broken into the penalty area before squaring the ball across goal, but Kudus shot from close range and missed the chance.
De Zerbi said in July that he wanted to treat the player like a “precious gem”, while working to develop his decision-making, strengthen him physically and give him the chance to play at the right time. Ben Davies also praised his ability and confidence in trying things during matches, saying that developing his habits in play was his next step.
