James Maddison congratulated his Tottenham team-mate Luka Williams-Barnett after he made his Premier League debut in the team’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday evening. The 18-year-old winger came on as a substitute and created a chance for Mohammed Kudus that went unfinished.
Williams-Barnett posted a picture of the moment he came onto the pitch on Instagram, writing that it was “only the beginning”. He received congratulations from Maddison, along with comments from Sandro Tonali, Lucas Bergvall, Xavi Simons and Micky van de Ven, while Fabrizio Romano commented with a star emoji.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi praised the youngster, saying he had chosen the right moment to give him his first appearance and describing him as a great talent. Goalkeeper Antonín Kinský also praised his quality, character and potential, and expressed hope that he would continue his good work.
De Zerbi had spoken in July about the need to give Williams-Barnett the right space and help him develop, particularly in decision-making and physical work.
