Cesc Fàbregas urged Como’s players to stay humble and keep working after his side beat French club Lens 9-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday. The win matched the biggest winning margin in the competition’s history and made Como the first Italian team to score nine away goals in it.
Fàbregas said he was upset that Lens scored in the 65th minute, explaining that the substitutions coincided with a change in the defensive setup. He added that the scorer, Ruben Aguilar, was his former teammate at Monaco, and praised his shot.
Como moved up to nine points from four matches, recording their sixth consecutive win in all competitions and taking fourth place in the Champions League standings. Fàbregas said the team had aimed to collect as many points as possible before their final two matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, adding that his focus now was on getting injured players back, especially in attack.
Fàbregas began his career at Como as coach of the under-19 team in 2023, then officially took charge of the first team in July 2024. Como finished tenth in his first season in charge, before taking fourth place the following season and qualifying for the Champions League.
