Everton beat Newcastle 1-0 at St James’ Park on Monday, with Thierno Barry scoring four minutes into the second half. The win lifted Everton to seventh in the Premier League, while Newcastle remained thirteenth, increasing the pressure on manager Matthias Jaissle.
The match’s goal came after Tyrique George’s shot was saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček, who pushed the ball to Barry to score. Newcastle protested the goal, but it was allowed to stand after a lengthy VAR review over a possible offside. Fabian Schär missed a chance to equalise, while Anthony Elanga came close to scoring when his shot hit the post before Everton’s defence cleared it.
Newcastle midfielder Jacob Ramsey was sent off in the closing seconds after receiving two bookings within one minute, following a foul on Harrison Armstrong. The team had been unable to score, while Jordan Pickford saved two attempts from Yoane Wissa in the closing minutes.
Everton secured their second win over Newcastle in five days, after beating them 3-1 in the League Cup on Thursday, and ended a run of two consecutive league defeats. Newcastle, meanwhile, lost four of their last five matches in all competitions, and Jaissle and his players were booed at half-time and after the final whistle.
Jack Grealish was absent from Everton’s squad for the second match in a row. The club said he was not fit to play, having been left out of the previous match against Newcastle for what the club described as a breach of discipline.
