Emery: Barcelona are among the favourites to win the Champions League, and Flick’s influence is clear

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery praised Barcelona ahead of the teams’ Champions League meeting, calling the Catalan side one of the leading contenders for the title and saying they can beat any opponent when they are at their best.

Emery described Barcelona’s match against Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round as evenly matched and open, and said both teams were among the favourites to reach the final. He also said Barcelona’s defeat to Real Madrid came in circumstances that included defensive absences, which may have affected the result.

The Aston Villa manager praised Barcelona’s midfield, mentioning Rodri, Pedri and Fermín. He also singled out Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, saying Yamal is currently the player closest to winning the Ballon d’Or.

Emery said Hansi Flick’s influence was clear in building a team with character and an attacking commitment. He added that Aston Villa seek challenges and are learning how to face teams such as Barcelona, despite the significant gap between the sides. He noted that Barcelona face greater pressure as one of the leading contenders, but their players are used to dealing with it.
