Bernardo Silva named Portugal’s new captain after Ronaldo’s international retirement

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus confirmed Bernardo Silva as the national team’s new captain, succeeding Cristiano Ronaldo after his international retirement. Jesus announced the decision on Friday while naming a 28-player squad for the Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales.
Jesus explained that the choice of captain is based on the number of international appearances, and that Silva, with 115 caps, will lead a leadership group that includes Bruno Fernandes (97 appearances), Rúben Dias (84), João Cancelo (77) and Rúben Neves (73). The other leadership responsibilities will be shared among the players according to their international experience.
Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark in Braga on November 14, then play Wales in Cardiff on November 17. Ronaldo announced his international retirement on Thursday, after a 23-year career with the national team in which he played 234 matches and scored 146 goals.
Silva has previously captained Portugal in Ronaldo’s absence. Jesus praised the player’s experience, quality and current form, while Silva described playing alongside Ronaldo as a source of pride and gratitude.
