Newcastle are unlikely to sanction defender Amar Dedic after he was seen carrying a bow and arrows in the Northumberland countryside, prompting a police manhunt involving an armed unit. The player is expected to start his side’s match against Fulham on Saturday.
Northumbria Police said they received a report on Wednesday afternoon of two men carrying a bow and arrows near a reservoir in the Harlow Hill area. Police stopped a car in Darras Hall and seized the bows and arrows from its boot. They said the equipment was for recreational use, there was no threat to the public, and inquiries were ongoing. UK law prohibits hunting animals with bows or crossbows, but the source did not indicate that Dedic or his friend had been hunting.
Newcastle’s fourth-choice goalkeeper Mark Gillespie and former defender Paul Dummett are believed to have helped calm the situation; they happened to be passing Dedic’s home, saw the police and stopped to help. The club is understood to view the player as having acted foolishly. Dedic joined Newcastle from Benfica in August for £29.5 million.
