Why Barcelona Brought Forward Its Move for Karim Adeyemi
Barcelona had planned to sign Karim Adeyemi after his Borussia Dortmund contract expired in summer 2027. But the player’s stance on a renewal and Ferran Torres’s departure prompted the club to act sooner. According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Dortmund threatened to reduce Adeyemi’s playing time if he did not clarify his position on a new deal.

Barcelona had planned to sign Karim Adeyemi after his contract with Borussia Dortmund expired in summer 2027, but the player’s stance on a renewal and Ferran Torres’s departure prompted the club to bring forward its move. According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Dortmund threatened to reduce Adeyemi’s playing time if he did not settle his position on a contract extension, making a spell away from matches an option that could harm his career and development.
Hansi Flick is credited with playing a pivotal role in pushing for the signing of the German winger. Barcelona had been monitoring the player for some time, and the coach was keen to bring him in, drawing on his knowledge of Adeyemi’s abilities from his work within the German national-team setup. The fact that Adeyemi had one year remaining on his contract also gave Barcelona an opportunity, according to the report, to negotiate a financial agreement with Dortmund. Meanwhile, Ferran Torres’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain left an attacking vacancy that Barcelona wanted to fill.
Adeyemi began his Barcelona appearances with four goals and three assists in La Liga, as well as two goals in the Champions League, in 452 minutes across 13 appearances. Flick uses him as a starter or substitute, making the most of his speed and ability to change the pace of attacks. The challenge for the player remains to maintain his level and compete with his teammates for a starting place.
