LaLiga president Javier Tebas criticised Real Madrid over its stance on the Negreira case, saying repeated attacks on Barcelona were unacceptable. He made the comments to reporters on Monday, according to a report by AS.
Tebas accused Real Madrid of trying to prolong the case, saying the club was acting as though Negreira were in the referees’ dressing rooms at every stadium where it played. He added that LaLiga had gone to prosecutors before Real Madrid, and that the club’s president had been a board member for six months after the case emerged. At the time, during his involvement in the Super League project, the president defended the club at a general meeting, a club whose friend he was.
Tebas said Barcelona would accept responsibility if necessary, but he did not believe the club could be blamed at this point, and considered Real Madrid to be the one seeking to prolong the proceedings. His comments came after Real Madrid beat Racing 3-0 in the league, in a match in which the hosts protested a penalty awarded to Kylian Mbappé, with no video review taking place. Racing coach José Alberto called the decision decisive and undeserved for a mere contact.
Relations between the two sides became strained after Real Madrid called for Tebas to resign following his comparison of the club’s repeated attacks on referees to propaganda methods in Nazi Germany.
