Raphinha’s Contract Renewal Could Allow Barcelona to Sign a Centre-Back in January

Barcelona are considering signing a centre-back during the winter transfer window if needed. According to Sport, renewing Raphinha’s contract until 2030 and redistributing his salary could increase the club’s available margin under Financial Fair Play rules.
The club’s vice-president, Ferran Olivé, said the current financial surplus is limited, at between 3 and 4 million. Raphinha’s salary is expected to be lower until the end of the current season after his earnings are spread over later seasons, which could allow Barcelona to make a move. However, the report rules out the club being able to afford the cost of signing a top-tier player and his salary, and presents a loan as an alternative.
The report notes that João Cancelo arrived at Barcelona on loan from the Saudi league during the previous winter transfer window, before the club signed him permanently for three seasons in the summer. It also lists Manchester United player Lisandro Martínez among the possible options. His contract expires on June 30, 2027, and the report says he can negotiate with other clubs from January and that his disagreement with coach Michael Carrick could make his departure easier. The report believes a move could involve a low initial cost and salary, with the financial difference settled later.
The report attributes Barcelona’s need to strengthen at centre-back to a wave of injuries and a lack of options in the position, despite Jules Koundé, Eric García and Andreas Christensen nearing the end of their recovery programmes. It notes that Hansi Flick is avoiding taking risks as the team aims to compete for every trophy.
