Reports say Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United manager for at least the next two matches, despite his team’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea. The result extended United’s winless run in all competitions to nine matches, the club’s worst such streak since 1988. United are seventeenth in the English Premier League, ahead of the relegation zone on goal difference.
The defeat followed United’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, after which talks with club officials resulted in Carrick staying in his job. Morgan Rogers scored after the break, then Lisandro Martinez was sent off for a second booking, and a penalty was awarded from which Cole Palmer scored the second goal. Sporting director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada were in attendance to watch the match.
According to the report, club officials intend to wait until the November international break before deciding Carrick’s future. He will lead the team against Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, then against Aston Villa in the league next Sunday. Asked after the match whether he would lead the team in the next game, Carrick answered yes.
United have won only two of their 13 matches in all competitions this season and have kept just one clean sheet. The report said the club’s management had considered potential alternatives, including Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte. Roma host United after beating Udinese 5-2, and have scored 16 goals in their last four matches.
