A challenge by Aston Villa player Nicolas Jackson on Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí sparked debate over the refereeing during the teams’ Champions League match, after the referee showed Jackson only a yellow card in the 43rd minute.
Mundo Deportivo reported that Jackson left his foot on Cubarsí’s ankle and said the incident deserved a sending-off. It also said that VAR did not review it and that Cubarsí limped after the challenge. The newspaper added that Jackson later tried to suggest Cubarsí was pretending.
However, the newspaper’s refereeing analyst, César Barrenechea Montero, considered that the challenge did not involve excessive force and thought a yellow card was sufficient.
