Alessia Russo gave Arsenal a vital 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Women’s Super League, scoring both of her team’s goals at Anfield. The victory temporarily eased pressure on manager Renee Slegers, although Arsenal’s performance was unconvincing.
Russo opened the scoring from an Emily Fox cross, but Liverpool equalised six minutes later through Beata Olsson, who took advantage of a direct pass from Natalia Ramos. Before half-time, Russo restored Arsenal’s lead with a header from a Lisa Baum cross.
The match saw controversy when a goal by Jenna Clark was ruled out for offside against Vivianne Endemann, following a corner that Arsenal failed to clear. Liverpool continued to press in the closing minutes, and Cornelia Kappocs came close to equalising in the 89th minute, but Arsenal held on to their lead.
Russo’s brace took her tally to seven goals in her last four appearances, and ten goals in her last seven matches for club and country.
